The Easy Way
1. Do not stay in the fast lane
Use the fast lane, do not coast in it. While many of us do not do this, we all have many close friends and family members who do. Many times there are cars lined up behind each other in the fast lane when there are spaces just to the right to be filled. We should all try to allow other people to pass out of common courtesy. We need to unplug the fast lane by treating it like a passing zone, and by moving to the lane to the right of it when we pass our local cluster of traffic. When we approach the next cluster of traffic we can again enter the fast lane. Untill then, we can let faster drivers through without going any slower ourselves.
This method is necessary until we can agree on which of the other solutions to implement. If we spread the word, everything can be used to help us have less traffic.
The worst is yet to come
With more and more drivers on the road each year, the above will only work to a certain extent. In future years there will be little to no space on the freeways even outside of rush hour. Life on earth will be more like life on the freeway and it will get more and more unbearable. Some of the next solutions can be seen as inconvient, but compared to the above will result in much less time and money spent on freeways for all of us.

2.The problem with single carpool lanes
In a lane where people are suposed to be rewarded for splitting the cost, pollution, and space for driving in a carpool lane, many times a driver will think twice about merging into one. Which is exactly the problem; theres is only a single carpool lane. A driver hoping to be free of traffic can easily find ones self stuck behind a slower driver. Trapped by the double yellow lines; there is nowhere to go. Luckily, there is an easy low cost solution. One that will give an incentive for more people to share rides, splitting the amount of people on the road drastically, leaving more space the freeways. Compared to expensive, long term, and unrealistic alternatives, allowing for double carpool lanes may be the most efficient thing we can do.
Benefits:
- Less cars on the road = Less traffic
- Less cars = Less polution
- Sharing rides = Putting less miles on ones car = Less depreciation on one's car
- Spending less on gas which is only getting more expensive
- Seeing a solution within our life time
